The poster for How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying actually began as a small banner graphic for the NCRT website at the beginning of the 31st season. All 31st season banners included a close up of a part of a costume against a textured backdrop. When it came time to build the poster, the director indicated that she liked the graphic and would be happy to have a larger version to represent her show.
The goal in building this poster was to represent the formal world of business in a much more casual, fun, and engaging setting. The initial image was a stock photograph of a man in a suit standing in front of a cement background. While I enjoyed the texture, the cement was far too bland and the man’s gray tie represented everything that we didn’t want to say about business for this show, so I made both elements black and white then colorized, increased the hue and settled on a bright pink / purple that brought us into the colorful musical world of the play’s backdrop.
For the title, I used the playful font Brody in a bright blue with a thick black outline, then rasterized the text and had fun with a distort tool, giving it a more exciting and dynamic shape. As a final touch, I grayed out the little bit of skin that was showing on the man’s neck, placing the emphasis on the costume itself and allowing our character to become a true everyman.
